Improving page load times - Case Study

Page speed is vital and hugely important when you consider getting new clients, but also when trying to keep them engaged. The average web reader will give about 15 seconds of attention to a given page, after that they move on. So we decided over the course of a couple of months, to apply various methods and techniques to our site, server and software to see if anything could help. This particular article is relevant to Joomla. However, many of the options discussed below are available for other CMS’s including WordPress.

Site5

Site5 is a hosting company that specialise in hosting for Designers and Developers. They are also excellent when you need support for CMS systems like Joomla and Wordpress. With a vast searchable knowledgebase, you can see all the recommended plugins, advice and changes needed to make your site the quickest it can be.

We moved Intown Web Design to a Site5 hosting package and here are the results:

SSL and HTTPS

To give you a very brief understand, HTTPS offers an extra layer of security over the typical HTTP protocol. This happens because HTTPS uses SSL to move data. HTTPS matters because it provides critical security and data integrity for both our websites and users

Increasingly, HTTPS is becoming a compulsory protocol. It is a search result factor in Google search, improves page/site loading speeds, non-HTTPS browser alerts are becoming more common, and if all that is not enough, Wordpress have announced that certain features in future Wordpress install's will only be available to those with HTTPS.

See the 'before and after results' of our SSL/HTTPS page statistics:

PHP7

PHP7 became supported from the Joomla 3.5 release and onwards. PHP7 offers a variety of great additions to modern systems, but for the case of this article, we will discuss page load speeds. The PHP team themselves have boasted vast improvements in page speed, but how does that all compare to a Joomla website?

Well, we can say with happiness that using PHP7 over PHP5 meant plugins were loading up to 2x faster, and not only that, it consumed less system memory! A crucial figure to consider if you have large volumes of traffic in turn leading towards saving vast amounts of money while engaging your customers within that 15-second window
